Our Begining

Richlands Insurance Agency was originally organized in 1950 by two brothers, A.B Ervin Sr. and W.C. Ervin. The original name was Ervin Brothers Insurance Agency, but was later changed to Richlands Insurance Agency when Mrs. Margaret B. Lockamy joined the firm. In June 1963, upon the death of A.B. Ervin Sr., his son Byron came aboard and helped build it to it's present status.

Originally, the business was built around the Fire and Casualty Insurance business. Realizing that its many customers needed Life Insurance as well, this coverage was added in 1965. To complete its desire to become a full service agency for the community, Real Estate was added in 1966, and the name was changed to Richlands Insurance and Realty.

A. Byron Ervin, Jr.

A Native of Richlands, Byron grew up on a farm, farming tobacco, corn
and livestock. After graduation from Richlands High School, he attended
Campbell University, majoring in business administration. Byron has
been active in many civic and business affairs in the town and county.
He has served as past president of the Richlands Jaycees, The Richland
Area Chamber of Commerce and the Onslow County Economic
Development Board.

Jeannette F. Ervin

Born and raised on a farm near Richlands, Jeanette attended Richlands
High School and upon graduation went to work for Carolina Telephone.
Leaving there, she went to work at First Citizens Bank, where she
stayed for five years. Her next career move was a job with the US
Postal Service where she remained for 24 years. She later joined
Richlands Insurance and Realty, where she serves as our bookkeeper
and maintains a current Real Estate Brokers License.

Iris H. Horne

Born and raised on a farm in the Back Swamp community of Duplin
County, Iris graduated from East Duplin High School and Hardbarger
Business College in Raleigh, NC. She worked with IBM Research
Triangle Park before joining Richlands Insurance and Realty. She
attended the Institute of Insurance at Chapel Hill obtaining her Property
and Casualty license and received her CPIW designation through the
Insurance Institute of America. Iris is married to an Onslow County
Magistrate, Wade Horne, and resides in Richlands.

Alwood Byron Ervin III

Better known as ''Al'', he is a native of Richlands and attended
Louisbourg College in Louisburg, NC. After graduation from college, he
reutrned to Richlands and worked in the automobile business. Al has
completed courses at the Institute of Insurance at UNC-Chapel Hill,
obtaining his Property/Casualty and Life Insurance license. He serves as
our Property Manager.

Steven R. Ervin

Steven was born and raised in Richlands, growing up on a farm and
helping out with the livestock. After graduation from Richlands High
School, he attended UNC-Wilmington and graduated with a BS Degree
in Business Management. Steven obtained his Property/Casualty and
Life license after completing the courses necessary at UNC-Chapel Hill.
In addition, Steven is a Real Estate Broker as well as a General
Contractor.

Dan W. Russell, Jr.

Following 45 years as owner of Onslow Insurance and Realty, Dan's
office merged with Richlands Insurance and Realty in 2001. He
furthered his insurance education by attending seminars in the state
as well as extensive schooling in Hartford, Connecticut. Dan is a lifelong
resident of Richlands and retired from the company in 2006.

Madeline H. Croom

Madeline was born and raised in Richlands and graduated from
Richland High School. Before joining Onslow Insurance & Realty in
1981, she worked with Carolina Telephone, Richlands Textiles and for
Richlands Elemantary School. Madeline attended Coastal Carolina
Community College, obtaining her Property and Casualty License in
1991.
